Congratulations to #NLECommunity artists Iman Issa and Nari Ward on receiving a 2017 Vilcek Prize from The Vilcek Foundation.
Iman Issa (When You Cut into the Present The Future Leaks Out, 2015) has received a Vilcek Prize For Creative Promise In Fine Arts for exploring, through works of various media, difficult philosophical questions, such as the individual’s relationship to places, figures, and events that are collectively familiar, or the difference between experience and recognition.
Nari Ward (If You Build It, 2014 & Bring in the Reality, 2015) has received the Vilcek Prize in Fine Arts for a body of found-object assemblage artwork that invites both a public discourse and an intimate dialogue with viewers on topics such as race, poverty, immigration, and the Caribbean diaspora identity.
The Vilcek Foundation raises awareness of immigrant contributions in America and fosters appreciation of the arts and sciences. The foundation achieves its mission through several programs. The Vilcek Prizes are awarded annually in the arts and biomedical science to prominent foreign-born scientists and artists who are recognized leaders in their fields. We foundation also awards prizes to younger foreign-born biomedical scientists and artists who have demonstrated exceptional promise early in their careers. These prizes were created to call attention to the seminal contributions made by immigrant professionals to the United States.
