Author and artist Kareem Hayes (AKA INF the Author) will read from his 2011 book Necessary Evil, and talk about some of the struggles he has faced, and how painting and writing served as a catalyst for transformation. Following the reading, Kareem will give a writing and poetry workshop for teens and adults.

Necessary Evil is based on the social ecology of New York City's drug trade during the early to mid 1990s. It is a story about the forgotten children of Run DMC and Rich Porter who became the misfit parents of New York's Bloods, Crips and URL Battle league. Necessary Evil takes place at a time when Mayor Giuliani and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) persecuted lower level drug dealers, while hip-hop was in its golden age, proving to be a substantial art form and economic powerhouse. Exploring the lives of its three main characters Jammal, Fire and Basil, the reader experiences the times and struggles of young urban America, while examining a crucial moment in New York's recent history.

Kareem Hayes is an artist, writer, community activist, designer and self-published author. Born and raised in Harlem, Kareem lives and works in Jamaica, Queens. www.inftheauthor.com.

This event is free and open to all ages.
