Crochet Corner, Ongoing
Thursday, June 02 2016 - Sunday, July 17 2016
Crochet Corner is an interactive instructional project that provides a space in which visitors can view samples of the artist’s works crocheted out of plastic bags, and make a piece of their own. Offering what the artist describes as “a cozy corner in which participants can sit, relax and socialize while they crochet,” Crochet Corner includes printed instructions that visitors can take away.
Antonia A. Perez is a mixed media artist whose practice involves actively engaging the public through performative action, teaching and discourse—will be crocheting on site, available to guide visitors in creating their own pieces. Plastic bags, which take centuries to degrade, have not only been an essential element of both the modern economy and our “throwaway” consumer culture, but have also emerged as a global environmental menace, polluting the world’s oceans and killing wildlife. By reusing this ubiquitous everyday item in her work, Perez finds beauty in the transformation of trash to art, while exploring the manual labor and textile processes that undergird various cultural traditions.
The artist will be teaching crocheting from 12:30 – 2:30pm, and from 3:30 – 5:30pm on the following dates: Saturday, June 4, Saturday, June 11, Friday, June 17, Saturday, June 25, Friday, July 1, Friday, July 8 and Sunday, July 17.
