Design for the Alien Within:  Making Art to Hide In with Jenny Polak

RSVP required to attend: please send your name and any dietary restrictions or questions.

Join us for a free, teen art-making workshop and talk with Jenny Polak about her work “Design for the Alien Within: The Media Center” on Saturday November 18th from 2-4pm at the Nathan Cummings Foundation in midtown Manhattan.

Participants will be invited to design hiding places for themselves or people they know. Looking at some well-known examples of hiding places in history, participants will use drawing and model making to share stories of where they used to hide as children, and who they might wish to help hide now.

Jenny Polak’s  Design For The Alien Within concerns immigrant-citizen power relations, reframing both domestic and gallery spaces as workplaces. To promote acts of disobedience to anti-immigrant policies that echo the experience of occupied countries, Design for the Alien Within designs and constructs ironic architectural hiding places for vulnerable immigrants. These interventions challenge both modernist architecture's elimination of hidden space, and the US Department of Homeland Security's intention to “eliminate the fugitive population”.
