Hector Canonge

In Profundus, 2016
Site-specific installation and performance, 2016

Interdisciplinary artist Hector Canonge incorporates new media technologies, cinematic narratives, performance, and social engagement to explore the construction of identity and gender, psychogeography and the politics of migration. Commissioned for Jameco Exchange, In Profundus uses architecture to respond to the site – a former storefront in Jamaica Queens. Canonge performed live on opening night and the resulting site-specific installation, along with a video of his performance, remained in the exhibition space. In Profundus weaves together movement, artifacts and time-based documentation to engage with Jamaica, from its dynamic history and cultural diversity, to the ever-changing landscape of the neighborhood. More broadly, the piece is a meditation on ritualistic processes, endurance and transformation.
