Saving For Our Future, 2012

Handblown glass and lottery tickets

Dimensions variable

Glass pigs fabricated by Leo Tecosky at Brooklyn Glass

The piggy bank is a classic symbol, taken from our youth, intended to prepare us to understand the value of “saving up” for something in the future. The piggy bank teaches us the patience to hold on to our money, and implies the security that it will always be there until we need to break it open.

This installation of 10 clear glass piggy banks stuffed with discarded lottery tickets mocks those certainties replacing “saving up” with dreams for getting rich quickly.   Placed in proximity to the giant vault, the installation suggests with humor that large or small, security and trust around savings and security belong to the naïveté of youth or pre – Great Recession.
