Invisible and often exploited, informal laborers are writ large and public in the series Luxury Interrupted, a collaborative multimedia project by artist Ramiro Gomez and photographer and filmmaker David Feldman. Nanny and Child, West Hollywood Park is informed by Gomez's own experience as a live-in nanny, where he formed close relationships with other workers on his former employer’s estate. This led him to begin creating collages; using architecture and interior design magazines, he reinserted the bodies of laborers into immaculate spaces. Painted, life-sized, cardboard cut-outs depict workers—nannies, gardeners, street cleaners—who toil behind the scenes to maintain the archetypal southern California cityscape and lifestyle. Installed in public spaces, photographed in situ and left behind to chance, the artworks serve as temporary monuments to living workers of Los Angeles communities.
