Chris Stain

Untitled (2010)

Painting here acts as a mirror to reflect the gritty reality and disjointed landscape that is Dumbo in transition.  Chris Stain’s work, inspired by the bold colors of graffiti, can be viewed in the theme of the American Social Realist movement that was made popular in the early 20th century by artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Ben Shahn, and Romare Bearden.  His powerful stencils depict the weary workers from Dumbo’s past whose names and struggles have been forgotten by history.
