Jameco Exchange

Crochet Corner is a project composed of two elements: artist Antonia Perez’s beautifully crocheted works made from reused plastic bags, and an educational space for viewers to crochet works of their own. Offering what the artist describes as “a cozy corner in which participants can sit, relax and socialize while they crochet,” Crochet Corner includes materials and printed instructions for visitors to keep. Perez—a mixed media artist whose practice involves actively engaging the public through performative action, teaching, and discourse—will crochet on site, and will be available to guide visitors as they create their own pieces.

Plastic bags, which take centuries to degrade, have not only been an essential element of both the modern economy and our “throwaway” consumer culture, but have also emerged as a global environmental menace, polluting the world’s oceans and killing wildlife. Perez reuses this ubiquitous item in her work, transforming waste into art and exploring the manual labor and textile processes fundamental to many cultural traditions.

The artist will be teaching crocheting from 12:30 – 2:30pm, and from 3:30 – 5:30pm on the following dates:

  • Saturday, May 21
  • Saturday, May 28
