Using carefully-chosen objects from nearby thrift stores and a living plant, Yuan references the role of the Village as a microcosm of the shifting “fantasies that have drawn so many to New York City.” Objects in the sculpture include a basketball referencing the famous West 4th Street basketball courts, a tourist-style camera, a record from the Def Jam company that was started in the dorms of NYU, and real and fictional accounts of New York City. The plant’s leaves, carved with the numbers of a clock, move in accordance with the position of the sun. The changing order of the leaves (or hours) becomes a metaphor for the neighborhood’s cycles of growth.
