2017 No Longer Empty Curatorial Lab Awarded NEA Art Works Grant

[New York, NY – June 15, 2017]— No Longer Empty is excited to announce our NEA Art Works Grant for the 2017 The NLE Curatorial Lab (NLE Lab).  Amidst the current cuts and state of uncertainty for arts funding, it is reassuring and invigorating that our national arts funding body recognizes our professional development program that extends NLE’s mission to curate site-responsive and community-centered exhibitions and programming in unique spaces.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $15,000 to No Longer Empty for the 2017 NLE Lab.

“The arts reflect the vision, energy, and talent of America’s artists and arts organizations,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support organizations such as No Longer Empty, in serving their communities by providing excellent and accessible arts experiences.”

NLE Lab, a socially conscious platform for experimentation in curating, is a professional development program for emerging curators and arts professionals interested in direct experience curating in an expanded field. The 2017 NLE Lab will be take place in Jamaica, Queens, culminating in a collectively curated exhibition at York College Fine Arts Gallery. NLE Lab is partnering with York College CUNY on the inaugural Southeast Queens Biennial. The conceptual framework of the biennial is Southeast Queens itself: its diverse voices and artistic and cultural ties to the local and global community. The artworks presented will be by artists who live or practice in southeast Queens as well as those who have strong connections to the area. Scheduled to open in February 2018, the exhibition will include works in all media, commissioned pieces, and related programming in collaboration with community organizations.

The call for applications to the fall 2017 NLE Lab is open. Deadline for applications is Friday, July 14, 11:59pm EST. For information and application guidelines, click here, or email
